Camera mirror CMS

Technology applied to transport continues to evolve, and one of the most interesting innovations featured in our Volvo FH trucks is Volvo Trucks’ Camera Monitor System (CMS).

Unlike traditional mirrors, this system replaces exterior rear-view mirrors with high-definition cameras connected to interior screens inside the cab. The result is a much clearer, wider and more comfortable view for the driver throughout every journey.

One of the features we value most is the improvement in direct visibility. By removing conventional mirror housings, blind spots are significantly reduced and the driver’s field of vision is expanded — especially important during manoeuvres, overtaking and urban driving.

The system also includes enhanced night vision with infrared light support, providing a clearer image in low-light conditions, rain or fog. In addition, the cameras feature automatic heating to prevent ice, condensation and moisture on the lenses.

Another key advantage is the ability to switch between different viewing modes thanks to intelligent zoom and wide-angle functionality. This allows the driver to adapt visibility depending on the driving situation and improve precision during complex manoeuvres.

Beyond safety, the system also improves efficiency. Replacing traditional mirrors enhances the truck’s aerodynamics and reduces air resistance, helping to lower fuel consumption.
